Save Money for Eventual Home Repairs
September 10, 2024
No matter how brand spanking new your home is, the truth is that sooner or later, it will require repairs. And more often than not, those repairs will occur when you least expect them. While routine maintenance can help prevent some of them, it’s not a miracle solution.
So for all those repairs that go with the homeownership territory, our best advice is to set aside money monthly or weekly so you’re better prepared when something goes awry or, for that matter, when you’re ready for a little remodeling.
Here are 5 of the most common home repair mishaps just waiting to happen:
- Leaky Faucet – That constant drip-drip-drip isn’t only annoying and wasteful, it can significantly drive up your water bill. Of course, even more potentially damaging are the water leaks you can’t see or hear – the kind that can seep into your floorboards from behind your refrigerator, for example, and cause structural damage.
- Running Toilet – Often called the “phantom flush”, a toilet that continuously fills and drains is often caused by a leaky fill valve. It can easily be replaced by a plumber and shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours.
- Cracked or Peeled Caulk – When caulk peels or cracks around sinks, bathtubs, and showers, it can allow moisture to seep into drywall and flooring, resulting in mold growth and rot. With a $4 tube of bathroom caulk and a little elbow grease, you can dig out the old caulk and reseal the area yourself. If you prefer to hire a handyman, it can cost you upwards of $300 or more.
- Faulty Light Switch – A light switch that sparks when you turn it on can be scary, but it’s typically an easy fix for an electrician. Still, don’t put that repair off because a light switch that sparks can also set off an electrical fire. When the electrician arrives on the scene, it’s also in your best interests to have him inspect all your household wiring for potential electrical fire hazards and code violations.
- Broken Gutters – Wet snow, ice, and soggy leaves can cause gutters to pull away from the house. A gutter contractor will clean the gutters and reinstall or replace supportive hardware and hangers for about $128 to $300, depending on the length of the gutter.
