Keep the Dryness at Bay and Your Skin Looking Radiant

These cool autumn months bring more than crisp mornings and changing leaves. For many people, cooler temps and lower humidity can also mean dry, itchy skin. But with a few simple changes to your skin care routine, you can keep the dryness at bay and your skin looking radiant.

Follow these tips for healthy cold weather skin:

  • Avoid harsh cleansers. Many skin care products are filled with fragrances, alcohol, and other chemicals that can leave skin feeling dry. Choose a fragrance-free moisturizing cleanser, preferably with natural ingredients that will restore your skin’s natural oil balance.
  • Use warm water. A hot steamy shower might feel luxurious, but the hot water strips your skin of moisture. Keep the hot showers to a minimum, and use warm water instead. Then be sure to pat, don’t rub, your skin dry with a soft towel. Apply a gentle moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen. Sunscreen isn’t just for summer. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to all exposed areas of your skin to protect it from the sun’s harmful UV rays. And just like anything else you put on your skin, make sure it doesn’t contain any drying ingredients.
  • Dress well. Avoid wearing fabrics, like wool, that can irritate the skin. Choose warm, breathable layers of clothing made from cotton or other natural materials
  • Add a little humidity. While too much humidity in the air can set the stage for mold growth in your home, too much dry air can lead to sinus problems, bloody noses, and dry, cracked skin and lips. Ideally, indoor humidity levels should be between 30 and 50%.

To add moisture to your home throughout the fall and winter heating season, contact Conway Services today and ask about a whole-house humidity control system. In works in conjunction with your furnace to deliver exactly the desired level of humidity, which most experts agree is between 40% – 50%.
