House Noises You Shouldn’t Ignore in Memphis and Millington
September 09, 2024
Shhh – can you hear that? A little pop, clank, or scratch from somewhere inside your home? Even if it’s a sound you’ve dismissed in the past as “no biggie,” this time you might want to pay a little closer attention.
Because even though it could be “nothing,” it might very well be a considerable “something” that needs taking care of right away before even more damage is done.
From the home comfort specialists here at Conway Services, here are three common household sounds we urge you act on right away.
Running Water
The sound of running water is about as common as it gets. But that doesn’t always make it normal, especially if you hear running water when no one in your house is currently using any of your plumbing fixtures or appliances. In that instance, the sound of running water most likely indicates pipe damage somewhere along the line, a problem with your toilet or, for that matter, a problem with any other water using system or fixture.
Furnace
From the moans and groans when you first fire up the furnace at the beginning of the heating season, to the clinks and bangs of the baseboards, your home heating system can make some pretty interesting noises. But the furnace itself should operate without much sound at all. So if you hear odd sounds coming from your furnaces – such as clinking popping, hissing, whistling, and the like – that’s a great time to call your home heating professionals to have a look around. The problem could be as simple as a clogged filter, but it could also be much bigger, such as poor airflow through your ducts, a loose fan or belt, and more.
Hot Water Heater
If you have a traditional storage tank water heater, it should be flushed periodically to prevent sediment from building up in the bottom of the tank. Once too much sediment builds up, you may hear a bubbling or cracking sound from within. Sediment build-up forces the burner to work harder, which can take years off the life of your hot water system.
