Do you dream of a relaxing in a spa-like bath retreat, until you wake up and realize it’s still your same old outdated, bland looking bathroom?

You’re not alone. But what stops so many people from taking that all-important first step toward a bathroom update is the perceived price tag. In fact, if you started the process today and were determined to gut your bathroom and start over, chances are you’d be looking at a minimum price tag of $15,000 or so.

But what if your budget is considerably less than that – no options? You know better than that! In fact, there’s a lot you can do very affordable without feeling you settled for second best.

So the first thing to do is figure out what you really, really don’t like about your bathroom and then make a plan to make those one or two things better. Then you know your money will be well spent because you’ll have addressed specific wants or needs.

Here are three such projects favored by Memphis area homeowners just to get your creative juices flowing.

1. Rethink storage.

The medicine cabinet is not the only place to store bathroom necessities. Where else? How about the space over your toilet which, in most bathrooms, goes unused. Consider an over-the-toilet cabinet or shelving unit to hold toiletries or small baskets of hand towels. For something completely different, how about an up-cycled coat rack to serve as a towel or robe hanger. If you have a pedestal sink, a place is woven or wicker storage baskets to hold towels and rolls of toilet paper. Or turn a small, unused nightstand into a one-of-a-kind storage piece.

2. Update the walls.

There’s more than one way to freshen up the walls in a space, with paint being one of the simplest and most economical. Color sets the tone for any room, and your bathroom is no different. You can match the paint to your existing finishes like flooring and cabinets, or make a bold statement with a contrasting hue. Add decorative accents like artwork and mirrors. Or install tile or wainscoting for an instant character on an otherwise plain wall.

3. Replace bathroom fixtures.

Even if you don’t have the resources to replace your vanity, countertop, or medicine cabinet, you can update the look of your entire bathroom by simply replacing fixtures and faucets. Installing a new, low-flow rainfall showerhead can make every shower feel like a trip to paradise. Add coordinating faucets, towel bars, and even lighting to pull the look together. With styles ranging from modern to traditional, you’re sure to find something that suits your taste and compliments the rest of your home décor.
